Located at the mouth of the Haihe River in Tanggu District southeast of Tianjin, Dagukou Fort is 60 kilometers from the city proper. First constructed in Ming Dynasty and renovated in 1858, it was regarded as a strategic pass for North China's coast defense. Originally on the both banks of the Haihe River stood five forts, namely, Wei, Zhen, Hai, Men and Gao forts. Now only Hai Fort is well preserved.
