Lao She (1899-1966), whose original name was Shu Qingchun, wrote many excellent novels and dramas in life, such as Camel Xiangzi, Teahouse, Longxugou, A Family of Four Generations, etc. He was an artist loved by the people. Lao She Memorial Hall is a typical quadrangle in Beijing, with an area of 400sqm.
Lao She lived here for 16yrs. During the period, he created many works after the founding of the People's Republic of China. In May 1984, Lao She's Former Residence was listed as a historical monument under city protection by Beijing Municipal People's Government. In July 1997 the family members of Lao She donated the former residence and all the cultural relics to Beijing Municipality.
